Em fevereiro, o príncipe passou mal e foi internado preventivamente em um hospital de Londres

Morreu, nesta sexta-feira (9/4), aos 99 anos, o príncipe Philip. A informação foi confirmada pelo Castelo de Windsor. Segundo o comunicado, ele faleceu pacificamente. O  Duque de Edimburgo era casado com a Ranha Elizabeth II. 

"É com profunda tristeza que Sua Majestade a Rainha anunciou a morte de seu amado marido, Sua Alteza Real, o Príncipe Philip, Duque de Edimburgo. Sua Alteza Real faleceu pacificamente esta manhã no Castelo de Windsor", informou a família real britânica, em sua conta no Twitter.

It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Em fevereiro, o príncipe passou mal e foi internado preventivamente em um hospital de Londres. Em março, ainda internado, ele foi submetido a uma cirurgia para um problema cardíaco preexistente. Segundo o Palácio, a cirurgia foi bem-sucedida. 

Tanto o príncipe Philip quanto a Rainha foram imunizados contra a covid-19 em janeiro. 

O Duque de Edimburgo 

Philip é filho de Andrew, príncipe da Grécia e da Dinamarca, e de Alice, princesa de Battenberg. Nasceu na Grécia em 1921, mas foi expulso do país junto aos pais durante o golpe de 1922.

Serviu a Marinha Real Britânica e casou com a, então jovem Elizabeth, em 1947. Para isso, ele teve que abandonar os títulos gregos e dinamarqueses e recebeu o de Duque de Edimburgo. Em 2017, aos 96 anos, ele deixou a vida pública.

Polêmico, são muitos os episódios de declarações que causaram desconforto, muitas vezes pelo racismo velado, e os episódios de relações fora do casamento. Quando o seu filho, o príncipe Charles casou com princesa Diana, ele foi um dos opositores ao romance.
