Na decisão que autorizou a operação da Polícia Federal contra o ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro, o ministro Alexandre de Moraes citou o escritor Machado de Assis. "A soberania nacional é a coisa mais bela do mundo, com a condição de ser soberania e de ser nacional", diz o trecho citado. Na sequência, o ministro ainda ressalta que a soberania nacional "não pode, não deve e jamais será vilipendiada, negociada ou extorquida", pois é um dos fundamentos da República Federativa do Brasil.

A Polícia Federal cumpriu dois mandados de busca e apreensão, além de medidas cautelares diversas da prisão. Bolsonaro passará a usar tornozeleira eletrônica e não poderá acessar redes sociais.  Além disso, o ex-presidente terá que cumprir o recolhimento domiciliar de 19h às 6h, não poderá se comunicar com embaixadores e diplomatas estrangeiros e nem com outros réus e investigados pelo STF, entre eles o filho, o deputado federal licenciado Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), que está nos Estados Unidos.

As investigações indicam que Jair Bolsonaro auxiliou o filho, o deputado federal licenciado Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) com um Pix de R$ 2 milhões, além de instigar os seguidores nas redes sociais contra o Poder Judiciário brasileiro e replicar mensagens do presidente dos Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, que atacavam a soberania brasileira e a independência judicial.

O advogado Fabio Wajngarten disse que a defesa de Bolsonaro recebeu "com surpresa e indignação a imposição de medidas cautelares severas" e citou que, até o presente momento, o ex-presidente "sempre cumpriu com todas as determinações do Poder Judiciário". Segundo Wajngarten , a defesa vai se manifestar oportunamente, após conhecer a decisão judicial.

Em nota oficial, o Partido Liberal manifestou "estranheza e repúdio diante da ação da Polícia Federal". "Se o presidente Bolsonaro sempre esteve à disposição das autoridades, o que justifica uma atitude dessa? O PL considera a medida determinada pelo Supremo Tribunal Federal desproporcional, sobretudo pela ausência de qualquer resistência ou negativa por parte do presidente Bolsonaro em colaborar com todos os órgãos de investigação", disse a legenda.
